Theriot reaches pro deal with Rays

Brayden Theriot went unselected in the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft, but he’s still heading to the pros.

Texas State announced Tuesday that the right-handed pitcher from Sugar Land signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. Theriot is the fifth Bobcat from the 2019 squad to join an MLB team, joining fellow righties Nicholas Fraze, Hunter McMahon and Connor Reich and third baseman Jaylen Hubbard.

Theriot was a strong reliever for Texas State during his four seasons with the maroon and gold. For his career, he finished with an 11-7 record, pitching 120.2 innings with a 4.85 ERA. This year, he tallied a 2-1 record with three saves in 17 appearances, registering a 5.20 ERA while striking out 23 across 27.2 innings.

The pitcher’s final game for the Bobcats came on May 17, when Theriot received the win in a 10-9 victory over UT Arlington inside Bobcat Ballpark that secured a share of the Sun Belt Conference regular season title. Theriot allowed one hit and no runs while picking up a strikeout in 1.2 innings of work.

Tampa Bay has two Rookie League affiliates: the Princeton Rays (3-4) of the Appalachian League in Princeton, West Virginia and the Gulf Coast League Rays (1-1) of the Gulf Coast League in Port Charlotte, Florida.
