San Marcos residents bring beginning ballet, jazz and tap dancing experience to locals

The art of dance is taking center stage in the community, thanks to local residents Cindy Gratz and Kathi Goodfellow. The Price Center has added something special to its ongoing vibrant arts and wellness programming — Community Dance, which is beginning adult dance classes led by Gratz and Goodfellow from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays.

The dance program returned post-pandemic and continues to offer three enjoyable and engaging classes in Beginning Adult Ballet, Beginning Adult Jazz and Shim Sham — a joyful introduction to tap dance.

Gratz, an accomplished performer and instructor, will lead the jazz and Shim Sham classes. Gratz has been a professor of dance and retired from Sam Houston State University.

“Perfect for beginners or those returning to dance after time away, these classes emphasize posture, balance and graceful movement. Whether you are new to dance or simply looking for a fun way to stay active, Community Dance is a chance to move your body, lift your spirit, and join a growing local dance community,” Gratz said.

Ballet teacher Goodfellow brings decades of dance experience to a new, inclusive ballet dance class series. Goodfellow has been teaching the class that introduces ballet basics in a fun, encouraging environment since 2021.

From attending classes at the Houston Ballet Academy as a child to performing with Kent State Dance Company and Augusta Ballet Company, Kathi has performed, taught and studied dance all her life. She is so honored to be able to share her knowledge and passion for ballet with adults of all ages and experience.

“Dance is the ideal way to stay fit at any age. Dance feeds the body, mind and soul with a community of learners who share a love of the art form,” Goodfellow said.

Dance student Barbara Pearsol said that dance is for everyone, no matter your experience level.

“There is something incredibly empowering about learning ballet as an adult. It builds confidence, balance and quiet strength that is so rewarding, “ Pearsol said.

Students range in age from 9 to 103 years old. The oldest student is Gratz’ mother who takes the tap dancing classes.

“The classes are about joy and expression — full of energy and timeless fun,” said Clay DeStefano, Executive Director of the Price Center.

Community Dance offers dance classes that are open to everyone — regardless of age or experience. These classes are designed to be accessible, joyful and grounded in the fundamentals of dance and movement.
