LBJ MUSEUM OF SAN MARCOS
The LBJ Museum of San Marcos is pleased to announce a temporary exhibit on the late President Jimmy Carter. This display also marks a 45-year anniversary of the June 11, 1980 President’s Salute to Congress in which a group of San Marcos residents played an important role.
Ralph Gonzales — owner of Pic-A-Taco, one of the most popular restaurants in San Marcos (now Casa Maria) — was invited to Washington, DC to cook for President Carter and congressional members on the White House lawn. This event was called The President’s Salute to Congress. The exhibit has a copy of the original itinerary for the San Marcos’ visitors along with several photographs of the group, which included Chris Banbury, Bob Barton, Jr., Robert Cavazos, Lupe Flores, Debbie Gonzales, Epifania Gonzales, Mary Gonzales, Peggy Gonzales, Virginia Gonzales, Ralph Gonzales, Ray Gutierrez, Marcos Hernandez, Ramiro Lugo, Melissa Millecam, Mike Mehler, Molly Mitchell, Joe Prado, John Stokes, Linda Silguero, Gordon Thompson, Bill Veidt, Janice Wade and John Wade.
San Marcos music added to the festivities, and the Mariachi band included: Eli Barron, Esequill Castro, Bob Guajardo, Joe Lopez, Joe Lopez, Jr., Domingo Mendoza, Rubert Ortiz, Alfonso Rubio and Hector Santos.
For the residents of San Marcos, it was an honor to represent their city and state in the nation’s capital. It was hard work for everyone but a wonderful once in a lifetime experience!
