LOCAL BUSINESSES

The UPS Distribution Center in San Marcos, located at 930 Luciano Flores Street, will be shutting its doors, effective June 20. This only applies to the distribution center; the storefront will continue operations in the city.

After five decades of service at the Cape street and Flores street location, … drivers were relocated to the Schertz and Austin UPS hub center facilities,” said Gerald Castillo, a San Marcos resident and friend to several of the employees at the San Marcos location. “[A] majority of the drivers live in San Marcos and now have to drive a longer distance to get to work — 30 minutes to an hour or more. Employees wanted the local district management to save the San Marcos hub, however it was upper corporate making the final decision [as] part of a broader effort by UPS to streamline operations.”

Karen Tomaszewski Hill, UPS Spokesperson, said that UPS employees are “extremely important” to the company, and it is aware of the impact this could have on staff and their families.

“We are working to place as many employees as possible in other positions,” Hill said. “We will work with those who may be impacted throughout the process to provide support.”

Hill noted that the announcement was made on a Q1 earnings call that the company would be executing the “largest network reconfiguration in UPS history.”

“This strategic initiative will optimize the capacity of our network to align with expected volume levels and enhance productivity through additional automation,” Hill said. “The reconfiguration will impact positions, and we are committed to supporting our employees throughout this process.”

Hill added that while the UPS building footprint may be evolving, their dedication to reliable pickup and delivery services is not.

“We remain committed to providing industry- leading service to customers in more than 200 countries and territories around the world,” Hill said.
