City invites feedback in first-ever Historic Preservation Plan

The city of San Marcos invites community members to weigh in on its first ever Historic Preservation Plan, which is a citywide effort to guide how historic places are preserved in San Marcos for the next five to ten years.

SEE HISTORIC PRESERVATION PAGE 4A the draft plan was shaped by public input gathered through stakeholder interviews, a citywide survey and a public Open House in September 2024. The plan outlines a long-term vision for preserving San Marcos’ cultural and historic resources while supporting sustainable growth and resilience.

“The Historic Preservation Plan is the first-ever plan to specifically guide preservation policy in San Marcos over the next five to ten years,” said Alison Brake, Historic Preservation Officer. “It affirms the community’s commitment to safeguarding its rich cultural heritage while supporting sustainable growth and resilience. These in-person events are a special opportunity to celebrate San Marcos’ shared heritage and help shape the future of preservation in our city.”

Community members will have several opportunities to learn more and engage with staff, starting with a sneak peek event on Wednesday, July 9 from 10 a.m. to noon at the San Marcos Public Library. The city will also host a Community Workshop on Wednesday, July 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center, located at 501 East Hopkins Street.

The draft plan will be available for public review and comment through Sunday, July 27. Printed copies of the plan will also be available at the Planning and Development Services Office, located at 630 E. Hopkins Street, Building 2. Residents can also participate in Mapping the Future: Preserving Our Past, an interactive online mapping activity open through the end of the comment period.

Through continued collaboration with residents, city leadership and preservation partners, the Historic Preservation Plan will help ensure San Marcos’ historic places remain vibrant and meaningful for generations to come.
