Juneteenth BBQ brings friendly competition to Plaza Park

Juneteenth BBQ brings friendly competition to Plaza Park

LOCAL EVENTS

The Juneteenth Foundation held its annual Juneteenth BBQ and Charity Fundraiser on June 21 at Plaza Park, alongside views of the sparkling San Marcos River. Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, when freedom came for 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas, following the march of 2,000 Union troops to Galveston Bay to formally announce the executive decree, according to the National Museum of African American History Culture website. Throughout the month, the Juneteenth Foundation has held many events to honor this momentous occasion in history.

At the BBQ, the smells of smoked meats wafted through the air as did the sounds of musical stylings by DJ Julius. Various elected officials and city leaders could be found judging the food or perusing the stands.
