SMFD saves dog trapped on ledge at Purgatory Creek

SAN MARCOS FIRE DEPARTMENT

The San Marcos Fire Department rescued a dog from a precarious situation at Purgatory Park on Saturday. Around 6 p.m., dispatch received a call that a 70 pound Golden Retriever had fallen approximately fifteen feet and was trapped, according to an official with the city of San Marcos.

The rescue occurred near Dante and Malacoda trails where the dog had walked to the edge looking for water and slipped off.

“The dog landed on a narrow ledge about 40 to 50 [feet] from the ground. Members from Rescue 1 assisted by Truck 3 were able to go rappel down the cliff and bring the dog up safely,” the official stated. “The dog Stella was safely returned to her owner.”

The city official stated that to avoid incidents, it is important that one’s dog remains on a leash while walking or hiking in city parks and natural areas.

“This is important for your dog’s safety as well as the safety of other hikers and wildlife,” the official stated. “Always bring plenty of water for yourself and your pet. It’s also a good idea to avoid the hottest times of the day.”
