KZSM: Revisit the 50s at our Sock Hop!

Get your kicks with a blast from the past this Saturday, July 19, from 6-10 p.m. at the VFW Hall, located at 1701 Hunter Road. For a modest $5 donation, John Michael and the Retro Cats will immerse you in glorious 50s and 60s rock, with lots of room for dancing! There’ll be plenty of food and drinks available to keep your energy up. You can show off your retro threads and enter our costume contest to win a trophy and other prizes. And you can take a chance on one or more of dozens of raffle items, including wall art, wine, beauty products and much more! All proceeds for this family-friendly event will go to support your True Community Radio Station, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. KZSM broadcasts at 104.1 LP FM and at KZSM.org.

John Michael and the Retro Cats play both original music inspired by the classic rock of the 50s and 60s and hits from the greatest artists of that era, including Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and of course Elvis. John Michael discovered early rock ‘n roll at age six or seven.

“When I saw Elvis singing, playing the guitar, moving his hips, and performing — it impressed me,” he explained. “I said to myself ‘that’s who I wanna become, I wanna be like him. My heart was set, and I never looked back.”

Michael has been playing live on KZSM since he was 12 or 13; he’ll give back to the station that nurtured him by performing at the Sock Hop. His manager, Sheri Swartz of Songbird Music, has volunteered to organize the event.

“I can’t imagine a world without KZSM in it,” she reflected.

The station that’s fostered so many local musicians needs your support to continue our mission. If you have an item or items to donate to our raffle, bring them to our studio at 216 North Guadalupe by Tuesday, July 15.

Look for some of those musicians and other volunteers when you’re out and about this weekend. You’ll see them with our donation buckets Friday, July 18, from 12 to 3 p.m. at the intersection of SH21 and SH-80; and Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the intersection of Wonder World Drive and Hunter Road.

And come and rock out with us Saturday at the Sock Hop. Be there or be square!
