KZSM to host fundraising Sock Hop, other donation opportunities

KZSM will be hosting a Sock Hop at the VFW on Saturday, July 19 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the VFW Hall, located at 1701 Hunter Road. This is in an effort to raise the amount of funds required to keep the station on the airwaves.

Local volunteers will be also standing on street corners this weekend to rally support for KZSM 104.1 FM, San Marcos’ only community-run radio station. The Bucket Brigade is a two-day street-level effort to raise awareness and donations.

Members of the public are encouraged to join the effort at the following times and locations: Friday, July 18 from 12 to 3 p.m. at the intersection of SH-21 & SH-80 Saturday, July 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the intersection of Wonder World Drive and Hunter Road The Bucket Brigade will feature volunteers holding signs and QR-coded donation buckets to remind drivers and pedestrians that community radio is worth fighting for.

“If you’re a musician who got your first airplay on KZSM, an event planner who counted on their help to promote your event, or a small business that relied on the station to spread the word — this is your chance to give back,” fundraising organizer Melissa Doss said. “This station is the glue of our creative community. If you’ve used the platform, now’s the time to help keep it alive.”

The Bucket Brigade leads directly into KZSM’s Sock Hop Fundraiser, which includes live music by John Michael and the Retro Cats, a best-dressed contest, food, raffle prizes and more. A $5 donation is suggested at the door.

KZSM is a volunteer-run, nonprofit radio station that focuses on local artists, original programming and grassroots voices. A recent article in the The Daily Record highlighted the station’s unique role in showcasing San Marcos culture and providing an outlet for community connection and creativity.
