SAN MARCOS ART LEAGUE
More than 100 people attended the July 11 opening reception of the Awards Show at the San Marcos Art Center. The work of 45 artists is in the exhibition, and every one of them displayed the best of their creativity. Jeffrey Dell, the Area Head of Printmaking in the School of Art and Design at Texas State, judged the show and nominated the winners, which were announced during the reception. There are five media categories, each receiving an Honorable Mention and a first place award. There was also an overall winner awarded as Best in Show.
The “Wet” category included two dimensional works in oil, acrylic or water color. Honorable Mention went to Mary Jo Cadiz for her acrylic on canvas painting Cafe Staff on Break. First place went to Mia Lambert for her acrylic on canvas painting Abstract on Deerskin.

Honorable Mention was awarded to Norman Bean for his work done in graphite and color pencils on paper The Glass Bottom Boat. Will Wehmeyer took first place with his pencil drawing Endless Wonder.
The “3D” category includes ceramics, sculptures, glass and assemblage pieces. Honorable Mention went to Bridget Hauser for her reduction fired stoneware with underglazes Desert Drama. Bernardo Meza took First place with his metal sculpture Steel Bobcat.
In the “Fiber and Mixed Media, Collage” category, honorable mention went to Gwendolyn Hustvedt for her batik on silk Marbled in Memory. Michelle Robinson was the first place winner with her needle felted portrait of a cat Ruby Cube.
“Photography and Digital Media” was the fifth category and Melanie Pena took Honorable Mention with Along the Country Road, a digital photograph. Rick Hastie won first place with an archival digital print Desert Night Walkers.
Best in Show was awarded to Jim Robinson for his ceramic piece Distractions Bowl.
The show is available through the end of July.
