Second suspect in downtown shooting detained

The second suspect wanted for Capital Murder, Avery Saul Bowman Jr., related to the shooting incident that ended in two fatalities in downtown San Marcos on July 19 is now in custody, according to information provided by the city of San Marcos. The shooting began with a fight that escalated when Bowman stole a necklace from one of the individuals in the brawl. Bowman then began fighting the individual from which he stole the necklace when the person he was with, Jeremiah Jayden Tobias, got involved and shot three people, which resulted in two deaths. Tobias was apprehended the same day of the incident. Bowman is charged with Capital Murder because two people died during the commission of a burglary.

“Thanks to Hays County Crime Stoppers and members of the community for helping us locate this suspect and a previously unknown witness,” the city stated.

This is not Bowman’s first offense; he was arrested in February of 2023 for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon and in December of 2023 for Harassment of a Public Servant.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with additional information is asked to contact San Marcos Police at 512-753-2108.
