I dropped some years on the dance floor at the VFW last Saturday. John Michael’s vintage rock reconnected some frayed synapses and recharged me. So, a heartfelt thanks to John and the Retrocats and everyone who generously donated time and resources to make the Sock Hop a success, especially the amazing Sheri Songbird Swartz.
Besides feeling grateful, I’m left pondering the power of music. I like many kinds of music, but the rock ‘n roll of my teen years holds that special magic — it’s my music. What’s your music? How did it come into your life?
Some of our KZSM radio hosts share their music every week on 104.1 LPFM and KZSM.org.
“Music has always been the soundtrack to my life, and each genre reflects a different time and level of my personal and social development,” El Tio, host of “Musica Con Ganas” (Sundays 8-9 p.m.), explained. “The music I share on my show takes me back to my origins, growing up in San Antonio. It reminds me of who I am culturally and spiritually, which is something that can never be taken from me.”
Veteran DJ Mark Moniz (“Metal Mark Live,” Thursdays 10 p.m.-midnight) also locates his passion in his history.
“[Heavy Metal] is part of my youth growing up around rock ‘n roll in Hollywood, listening to bands on the radio, yearning for that lifestyle, waiting for the next song on the radio so you can make a mixtape was exhilarating,” Moniz said. “As an adult, I look back and see myself as a young musician wanting to imitate these great artists. That’s what drove me to broadcasting. so I can keep the sound of generation X alive.”
A very different genre forms a personal sound track for Limey’s Lass, host of “Celtic Corner” (Saturdays noon-2 p.m.).
“Celtic music is the fabric of my life,” Limey’s Lass said. “I grew up a Scot, so the music woven through my life has been Celtic. It is the music that my sister and I each walked down the wedding aisle to, and I still play it when doing ‘Domestic Diva’ chores. Celtic music is the heartbeat of my life, and I happily share it on my show.”
What music is the heartbeat of your life? You might find it on one of the dozens of music shows on KZSM. If not, we’ll help you create your own show to keep your music alive.
