SAN MARCOS POLICE DEPARTMENT
Cape road is closed until further notice after a vehicle flipped off of the Mill Race bridge on Monday, July 28, according to the city of San Marcos. The bridge was only open to one-way traffic at the time of the accident due to “bridge deficiencies.” During the accident, barricades were damaged, and the bridge will remain closed until they can be replaced with no timeline provided for when that will occur.
“Preliminarily, investigators believe speed played a factor in the accident. The vehicle had five kids and a female driver (not all related). All were transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. An infant was taken by helicopter to Dell Children’s, again, out of an abundance of caution,” an official with the city stated. “There were several community members who jumped in the water and helped get the people out of the car.”
The Mill Race bridge structure is located on Cape Road between River Road and Flores Boulevard.
