The start of the 2025 season is finally here as the Bobcats started fall camp this past weekend to prepare for Texas State’s final season in the Sun Belt Conference.

As the Bobcats begin training for the upcoming season opener against Eastern Michigan, here are some key position groups to keep an eye.

QUARTERBACK BATTLE?

At the end of spring practice, it was clear who the Bobcats felt comfortable with running the offense.

Despite being a redshirt freshman, Brad Jackson won the battle and emerged as a starter with his ability to not only run the offense but his leadership ability taking the forefront.

But then the staff added another quarterback during the summer offseason when Keldric Luster, a transfer from SMU, joined the team to once again stir up the room.

While Jackson still remains the favorite to be named the starter for Week 1, the addition of Luster adds a little bit more intrigue to the quarterback room than before.

WR3

Replacing the trio of Joey Hobert, Jaden Williams and Kole Wilson, fans will see a lot of new faces as new Bobcat wide receivers are looking to establish themselves.

Receivers Chris Dawn Jr and Beau Sparks both secured their spots as the WRs 1 and 2 but the battle for the third spot is a bit murky.

Potential breakout candidates include transfers Ty Mims of Southern Miss, Mavin Anderson of Cal and Tyrin Smith of UTEP. Of the high school recruits, sophomore Kylen Evans emerged as a potential starter along with freshman Jordan Martin.

CORNERBACK

The Bobcats lost several key contributors at the cornerback positions due to the transfer portal and graduation leading to a spring practice battle to replace both spots.

Seniors Trez Moore and Caden Grogan return from last year’s team with Moore having made 26 total tackles last season including making two interceptions.

However, their starting spots are not guaranteed with the addition of Craig Royal Jr. from Butler Community College, Jaden Rios from East Texas A&M and Khamari Terrell from Oregon.

The cornerback starting positions still remain open after spring practice and will be critical to the success of the defense for the 2025 season.
