KZSM: An eclectic new show from our haunted studio

The many locally-produced shows you hear on KZSM 104.1/KZSM.org provide not only information and entertainment but also a journey into the host’s imagination — a glimpse of the world through someone else’s eyes. “Wax Static” (Thursdays 6-7 p.m.), our newest live show, introduces the eclectic mindset of host Syd the Kid.

Like everything about the show, the catchy title reflects multiple sources.

“It’s a nod to Hot Wax Records,” Syd explained. “I also get told I have a ‘surfer’ voice, though I have never surfed ... so my mind went to surf wax.”

“Static” alludes to the pops on records, “plus the unprofessional pauses and static on the show.”

What’s the show format? “Everything. I grew up in the 2000s listening to 60s, 70s, 80s, and always loved finding obscure artists. You ever heard of DJ Kool Herc?” he asked.

He characterizes his musical tastes as essentially “Indie,” but points out that definitions of that term have changed over the years. Syd’s favorites are always changing as well. Lately, he’s been playing a lot of British DJ and producer Fred Again, and the new “End of Summer” track from the Australian group Tame Impala.

When asked how he plans each show, Syd cheerfully admitted “I don’t!” Every show will be a compendium of surprises, though at some point he will inevitably “yell into the mic because it feels good.” Syd feels both challenged and delighted by the possibility of sharing the studio with the invisible presence of Willie, KZSM’s resident ghost. Though Willie’s been quiet lately, in the past DJs have reported unexpected drafts, strange noises and inexplicable changes in their playlists.

Syd’s interest in radio began at Texas State, where he volunteered at KTSW 89.9, spending about three years as a DJ and producing and creating content for the website and social media channels. Like many of our program hosts, he discovered KZSM through our Station Manager Rob Roark.

“He works hard to give back to the community, asking little in return, so I figured the least I could do is make the time to DJ,” he said.

Syd’s list of radio role models is characteristically eclectic: Wolfman Jack, DJ K Swift, Jon Aielli, and KZSM Board Member Chris Gardner. Altogether, Syd the Kid and “Wax Static” are a perfect addition to the diverse, creative programming we offer to our diverse, creative community.
