KZSM: Where are those sounds coming from?

Most of the broadcasts you hear on KZSM 104.1/KZSM.org originate right here in our storefront studio, in keeping with our mission to serve as the voice of the community. But there are many hours in a week and a wide range of interests among our listeners, so we also expand the range of our programming with a few imported shows. Most recently, we’ve added “Public Radio Exchange” (PRX) on Tuesdays from noon to 4 p.m. and “Time 4 Hemp” on Wednesdays from 10 to 11 p.m.

“PRX” offers an endless variety of programming thoughtfully curated from Public Radio stations and other sources. According to their website, “PRX Remix is our 24/7 stream of the best stories and documentaries, handpicked from both independent creators and our podcast network Radiotopia.” Their diverse programming coheres well with our own goal of providing a platform for unheard voices. As they explain it, “our approach is grounded in the practice of opening closed systems by telling stories that might not otherwise be told, offering a wide variety of program choices.”

The ”Time 4 Hemp” website describes their broadcast at “a revolutionary radio program committed to ending global hemp prohibition, celebrating cannabis culture, and advocating for legal reforms.” Hosted by long-time cannabis advocate Casper Leitch, the show began in 1991 as a television series. Broadcasts include expert interviews, cultural commentary, and socially conscious music. The show strives “to shift public perception, amplify reform efforts and put a powerful spotlight on the many benefits of hemp and cannabis.” Recent debate over cannabis regulation make “Time 4 Hemp” especially relevant to Texans.

Like these two shows, any broadcasts we import have something special to offer or a connection to our community. For instance, the Hill Country Freethinkers Association underwrites “Freethought Radio” (Mondays 11 a.m. to noon) to share their perspectives with their neighbors. Our longestrunning import, “The Mop Tops and the King” (Mondays 9 to 10 p.m.) features regular commentary by two San Martians: Priscilla Delgado Hermiller provides a “Spotlight on Elvis;” Jennifer Kabay narrates “The McCartney Diaries.” “Make Believe Ballroom” (Mondays 1 to 2 p.m.) continues a big-band music show that first aired in 1935.
