Major Troy Oldbury is retiring from the Gary Job Corps Center after 21 years as the Corrections Program lead instructor. Prior to coming to GJC, Troy was employed at the Bradshaw State Jail in Henderson. In 2004, Troy came to Gary Job Corps; the Corrections Programs was in the infant stage of formation, and, through his guidance, it has become an exemplary Corrections Training Program in the Job Corps community. Over his many years at GJC, Major Oldbury has trained thousands of corrections officers that are currently employed throughout the corrections institutions around Texas. Among his graduates are Officer Dago Pates, 16 years at the Kyle Police Department, Captain Heather Escalante, corrections instructor at the Gary Job Corps Center, and PFC Kristian Menchaca, US Army soldier who lost his life in service to his country in Iraq 19 years ago.
With the Major’s guidance, cadets preformed in activities from Circuit of the America’s, South by Southwest, Q2 Soccer Games, Founder’s Day in Dripping Springs, Texas State University Football Games and Graduation Ceremonies, Fourth of July Parade and Fiesta Jamacia in Martindale, Sights and Sounds of San Marcos, and Hats Off For Veterans, to name a few. Oldbury will be taking his expertise on his new venture with the Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District to instruct at the DAEP Campus.
