The Rattlers opened up the season at home against the Pflugerville Weiss Wolves as San Marcos fell 3-0 [25-11, 2514, 25-15].

Despite the rough outing against the Wolves, Head Coach Ryann Torres is still confident in her team by the time district play starts.

“There were a lot of jitters and excitement leading up to the game today,” Torres said. “How we played today and how it turned out — I’m not upset at it. I think that we have a really great foundation to build on top of what we already have throughout this entire season. I really do think we will do very well come district.”

The Rattlers got off to a tough start in Set 1 when Weiss went on an early 50 run to go up 8-3 on San Marcos after being tied at 3-3. San Marcos was unable to crawl themselves out of the hole as the Wolves went on to win the first set 25-11.

The Rattlers bounced back, however, and battled against the Wolves in the second set. Trading points back and forth, San Marcos took a 9-8 lead after a serving error from Weiss. But the Wolves responded with a 6-0 run as the Rattlers were unable to recapture the lead as Weiss went on to win the second set 2514.

San Marcos refused to give up and battled against the Wolves in the third set before falling 2515 to give Weiss the sweep.

“It’s just like the little small things that you don’t really think about as a volleyball player, as you’re playing,” Torres said. “But the smallest things are the biggest difference when we’re missing them. It’s the talking, playing together and finding that cohesion of playing with one another. Some players are new on varsity and some are being pushed to lead. So it’s just the small, fine pieces and the fine tuning that.”

The Rattlers will make the trip down to Corpus Christi for the Spikefest Tournament, playing on Friday and Saturday.

Despite the tournament being just two days and the Rattlers set to face some tough teams, Torres is confident that the Rattlers will continue to improve.

“It’s going to be a very quick tournament,” Torres said. “There will be some teams that will be challenging, but it’s only going to make us better.”

San Marcos next nontournament game is set for next Tuesday against Austin Travis on the road. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
