A beloved client of the H.O.M.E. center passed this week, according to a Facebook post by the organization. George Barbour passed peacefully surrounded by H.O.M.E. Center team members this past week.

“Thanks to community efforts and support from multiple area agencies, he was housed during the past three years. Now we would like to ensure he has a proper burial and service. We are raising funds for his funeral arrangements, and we would be grateful for any donations to help with the expenses,” a Facebook post by the H.O.M.E. Center stated.

The H.O.M.E. Center is a nonprofit organization which provides outreach, mitigation and emergency response in order to reduce homelessness to functional zero in Hays County.

Barbour was originally from Virginia and had been in Texas for almost a decade and struggled with homelessness for about seven years.

“It’s hard to even explain until you’ve actually been homeless,” Barbour said in an unreleased interview.

He used to work landscaping jobs until he became chronically ill.

“I got so sick. I couldn’t do anything. Being out in that heat and the cold I continued to get sicker and sicker,” Barbour said.

He got connected to the H.O.M.E. Center who helped him get hospitalized and in an apartment.

“It makes me emotional every time I think about what H.O.M.E. Center did for me,” Barbour said.

In the interview, Barbour said that the H.O.M.E. Center saved his life and gave him purpose.

“George was far too young to leave this world. He gave so much of himself to others and our team members are grateful to have had the opportunity to know him,” the H.O.M.E. Center stated.
