AUGUST Women’s Hall of Fame Nominations Parks and Recreation is looking for outstanding local women to honor during the annual induction ceremony in October. A committee of former recipients will review the nominations and select the honorees. Criteria for selection include: volunteerism in multiple areas of service; meeting the needs of the community; demonstration of community initiative; and influencing positive change and going beyond the call of duty.
Paper nomination forms will also be available at the Parks and Recreation Office. Nominations close Aug. 15 at 4pm.
Art for Adults: Intro to Mosaic (3-Part Series) When: Friday, Aug. 15, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, noon to 4 p.m., & Sunday, Aug. 17, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Learn the basics of mosaic making. Participants will make a small mosaic address marker and will commit to three consecutive sessions; day 1 is color and design selection, day 2 is in/out gluing, and day 3 is grouting.

60+ Indoor Cornhole When: Aug. 19, 1 p.m.
Where: San Marcos Activity Center What: Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to this sport, join us once a month for 60+ Indoor Cornhole. Cornhole is similar to horseshoes except you use wooden boxes called cornhole platforms and corn bags instead of horseshoes and metal stakes. Contestants take turns pitching their bags at the platform until a contestant reaches the score of 21 points. A bag in the hole scores three points, while one on the platform scores one point. Benefits of playing Cornhole for Senior Citizens include increased mobility and leg strength, depth perception and vision, and balance and hip mobility.

Fight the Fall
When: Aug. 20, noon to 1 p.m.
Where: San Marcos Activity Center Who: Fyzical Therapy & Balance What: Balance is in their name, and they specialize in it. At FYZICAL, fall prevention is one of the cornerstones of their mission.
Their clinics across the country join together to “Fight the Fall” by spreading awareness of the danger of falls and how falls can be prevented. Each class meeting will focus on static and dynamic balance, home safety, balance strategies, and education.
Instructors will assess each person’s level of confidence and instruct in strengthening and strategies that are specific for balance and general stability.

Where: San Marcos Public Library Who: Create an altered book or work on Zentangles in this combo class! A Zentangle is a miniature abstract work of art created by a collection of patterns. It is typically done on a 3.5” X 3.5 “paper” tile using a pencil and a black pen. The small size allows for a work of art that can be completed in a relatively short period of time. Where: San Marcos Activity Center What: Humana wants to help members of the community achieve better health and well-being so they’re able to take care of themselves and those who matter most to them. This is why they developed many resources to help people find their path to good health and well-being. Programs- in-a-box is an initiative to help their associates provide educational health and wellness content to the communities they serve. Their comprehensive library features over 35 classes. Their educational classes range from 30–60 minutes and cover a variety of well-being topics. The programs-in-a-box library features presentations from the following categories: Health and Lifestyle, Nutrition, Behavioral Health, Caregiving, Chronic Conditions and Technology.
