Food Bank expands operations with move to larger facility

Hays County Food Bank is proud to announce its move to a new, expanded location at 1612 S IH 35, San Marcos, marking a major step forward in the fight against food insecurity in Hays. The relocation from the previous address at 220 Herndon Street allows the food bank to increase the impact their food assistance can have in the community.

The new facility offers substantially more space for food storage, staff operations and client services. Most notably, the expansion includes the introduction of the county’s first-ever Client Choice Market — a groundbreaking initiative that will allow individuals and families experiencing food insecurity to choose their food in a grocery store-style setting.

Clients will now have the opportunity to make choices about which proteins, produce and shelfstable items work for their household, empowering them to make selections that best fit their personal preferences, cultural traditions and dietary needs.

“We couldn’t be happier to bring this change to San Marcos,” said Lisa Young, Executive Director of Hays County Food Bank. “With more space and the launch of the Client Choice Market, we’re putting dignity and personal agency at the center of hunger relief in Hays County.”

The food bank will continue its essential programs — while adding the Client Choice Market to increase access to nutritious and delicious food — now with enhanced efficiency and capacity thanks to the new facility.

A public ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house will be held on August 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. to welcome the community to the new space.
