Our primary mission at KZSM104.1 LPFM and KZSM.org is to broadcast the many voices of our diverse community. But along with a range of locally generated shows, we also strive to provide programming of interest to the widest possible variety of listeners. To do that, we sometimes enrich our repertoire with imported shows.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the San Marcos population aged 60 years and older increased 189% from 2010 to 2020 and an additional 17% by 2023. In recent years, San Marcos has been touted as a “best place to retire” in more than one publication; Kissing Tree, La Cima, and other neighborhoods are filling up with retirees. With that in mind, we’re happy to introduce the most recent addition to our schedule, “Aging Matters” (Thursdays 11 a.m. to noon).
The show originates at WERA-LP 96.7 FM in Arlington, VA and is carried on the Pacifica Network. Hosted by Cheryl Beversdorf, “Aging Matters” is a weekly interview program featuring guests with expertise about a broad array of timely topics affecting the lives of older adults and their loved ones. “The discussions cover subjects both informative and entertaining and help educate listeners about living better and longer,” as their website explains. A list of recent shows reveals an impressive variety of topics, including: “Decluttering and Downsizing,” “Senior Moments,” [wait, did I already list that?] “Bone and Joint Health,” “Laughter Yoga,” “Hearing Loss,” “Romance Scams,” “Pet Loss,” “ Aging and Beauty,” “Financial Planning” and “Lifestyle Medicine.”
Last week’s episode covered “Aging in Place.”
“For older adults, aging in place means remaining in their homes and communities rather than moving into a residential care facility. A range of creative housing options designed with the unique needs of older adults in mind are becoming available in communities,” the “Aging Matters” website explains.
Cheryl Beversdorf has been hosting and producing the show since 2017. She is a registered nurse and Vietnam era veteran, former chief staff executive of the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans and three not-forprofit health associations. Her guests include physicians, authors, therapists, financial advisors and experts of all kinds. If you’re part of our rapidly expanding senior population, something useful or entertaining is waiting for you Thursdays at 11 on 104.1 LPFM or KZSM.org. If you’re not part of that demographic, you will be. Tune in and be prepared!
