San Marcos entered the second week of fall camp for the 2025 as the Rattlers prepare for their first scrimmage of the season.

Head Coach John Walsh is pleased with his team’s progress since spring practice and throughout fall camp.

“We’ve tried to keep it real simple and not expand the game plan,” Walsh said. “Just making sure we’re doing the main things correctly and I’m really pleased where they’re at. The retention from the spring has been great. We’ll be really light tomorrow, go to the scrimmage Thursday and compete then the game plan will grow starting Monday.”

One of the improvements Walsh has seen the team achieve is how the Rattlers are constantly improving themselves in their one-on-one situations.

“The best thing I’ve seen is we’ve worked to make each other better,” Walsh said. “Sometimes we’ve been pretty immature and I saw the maturity in the springtime get better. But right now, [Hank] Harris and [Jordan] Lampkin are going at each other, the offensive line and defensive line are going at each other. We’re not doing it in an ugly way [but] in a very mature way.”

Maintaining a competitive edge in high school football during practice is a delicate balance due to depth issues which the majority of high school programs face on a daily basis.

For Walsh, the team has done a great job of maintaining a high level of physicality while also making sure one another stays safe.

“It’s really hard in high school football because you want to be careful of injuries,” Walsh said. “You don’t have a lot of depth [no matter] where you’re at. But we’ve gone at it. They have understood to go hard, be physical, but be safe.”

For the first time this season, the Rattlers will face an opponent that is not wearing a purple jersey when San Marcos scrimmages Laredo United South.

While the Rattlers are excited to battle someone not of their own, Walsh wants to see his team compete at a high level.

“The ones are going to play the first half and we’ll play the twos and threes in the second half,” Walsh said. “I just want to see us do exactly what we coach you to do on the grass with someone else across from us and officials out there.”

The San Marcos-Laredo United South scrimmage is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Jourdanton.
