The Bobcats kicked off the 2025 season with a sweep of the Lamar Cardinals 3-0 [25-14, 25-23, 25-12] in an exhibition match.
In the first set, Texas State took a commanding 8-2 lead over the Cardinals.
The deficit was too much for the Cardinals to overcome as Texas State went on to win the first set at 25-14.
The second set was more competitive as the Bobcats and the Cardinals traded points back and forth. After being tied at 5-5, Texas State and Lamar once again traded points to be tied up at 10-10.
After trading points, the Bobcats found their opening. Tied at 16-16, Texas State took advantage of two Lamar errors before redshirt-junior Samantha Wunsch capitalized on a kill to put the Bobcats up 19-16, their largest lead of the set.
Lamar made one last comeback and cut Texas State’s lead down to 22--21 following a service error. But the Bobcats slammed the door on Lamar’s comeback and defeated the Cardinals 25-23 to win the second set.
The start of the third set was once again competitive with the Bobcats holding a 5-3 lead. But Texas State went on a big 5-0 run against the Cardinals capped off by consecutive kills by senior middle blocker Bailey Hanner to put the Bobcats up 10-3.
Lamar responded with a 4-1 run as Texas State’s lead was trimmed down to 11-7.
But the Bobcats answered back with their largest run of the match, going on a 10-1 run and taking a commanding 218 lead.
Texas State went on to win the third set 25-12 to complete the sweep and win the match.
Wunsch led the team in kills with 13 followed by junior outside hitter Brooke Bentke with five and redshirt sophomore Ally Adair with four.
Junior setter Dylan Gilkey led the team in assists with 35 while senior Maggie Walsh led the team in digs with eight.
Texas State will open the regular season on the road Saturday at the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio. The Bobcats will face off with two former conference rivals in both Stephen F. Austin and I35 rival UTSA.
First-serve for Texas State-SFA is set for 11 a.m. Saturday while tipoff for Texas State-UTSA is set for 6 p.m. Saturday.
