Texas State dropped their first game of the soccer season as the Bobcats fell to the Arizona State Sun Devils 5-1.
The loss drops the Bobcats’ overall record to 2-11 for the season while the Sun Devils improve to 20-1.
“We saw some really good things from ourselves today,” Head Coach Steve Holeman said. “We had moments of creating good opportunities and keeping the ball under some good pressure.
“Arizona State is good. They were better than us, deeper than us and it showed over the course of the game. They got a little bit stronger and we got a little bit weaker.”
Holeman said the team will improve as more players return from injuries. “You never want to be on the wrong end of a loss like that, but we get better because of it.”
Texas State got the board first in the first half when senior forward Mady Soumare connected with a header following an assist on the free kick from freshman midfielder Matsuri Tsutsui, to put the Bobcats up 1-0 in the 7th minute.
Unfortunately for the Bobcats, this marked the last time Texas State held the lead.
Arizona State tied the game in the 19th minute on a goal from Sierra Bergen. Later in the 30th minute, Ava Wright gave the Sun Devils the lead at 2-1.
Addison Baltodano extended the Arizona State lead in the 42nd minute. Texas State trailed 3-1 at halftime.
Arizona State continued to punish the Bobcat defense as Sierra Bergen scored another goal for the Sun Devils to go up 4-1 in the 47th minute.
Tatum Thomason added the final goal for the Sun Devils in the 62nd minute, giving Arizona State the win at 5-1.
Texas State returns to play Thursday night as the Bobcats face-off with one of their former conference foes in Stephen F. Austin. The Lumberjacks are one the Bobcats mostplayed opponents, with 27 total games between the two teams. SFA leads the series 13-12-2.
Kickoff for Texas State-SFA is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
