WORLD-CLASS EXHIBITS AT THE WHITTLIFF

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND?

The San Marcos Daily Record staff gives recommendations on what to do in our community

I have lived in San Marcos for six years, moving here in 2019 to work at Texas State University. One of my favorite places to visit has been the Wittliff Collections, a gallery on the seventh floor of the Alkek Library on the Texas State Campus. As a photographer myself, I always enjoy the great selections of photographs, which range from concert and candid shots of musicians, to more abstract art images, well as vintage photos dating back to the dawn of photography. One of the current exhibitions, “Tesoros: Treasures of Mexican Photography,” features photos by two of my favorite photographers, Graciela Iturbide and her mentor Manuel Alvarez Bravo. One of the other exhibitions, “Viva, Terlingua” features photos of Jerry Jeff Walker and his band taken during the live recording sessions for this classic album in August of 1973. Starting Sept. 6, they will expand their hours from Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to include weekends from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
