KZSM Welcomes “Unsigned Hype” on Saturday nights

With our newest live show, “Unsigned Hype” (Saturday 11 p.m.-Sunday 1 a.m.) KZSM 104.1/KZSM.org expands our ongoing mission to broadcast unheard voices into the realm of hip-hop and beyond. Hosts WestCoast Bang’n (Alaine Mobley Jr.) and Nicki Steals “play all genres of music but specialize in old school hip hop and unsigned underground artists that are making noise in their cities’ local music scenes and social media in some cases,” according to Mobley, the founder and owner of Unsigned Hype Media. The original “Unsigned Hype” was a column in “The Source” magazine that helped launch the careers of many hip hop artists, including Eminem and The Notorious B.I.G., by promoting unsigned talent.

The host plays his own music, along with works from their extensive archive and songs sent to them from cities in the U.S. and all over the world. Also, live or phone-in guests share their music and talk about their work.

Mobley’s journey began with a need to promote his own music. “I created a platform to facilitate myself, and it grew bigger than me and took off on its own. I just held on for the ride, and 24 years later it’s grown into a monthly magazine and a monthly mixtape. I’ve become more than a music artist” he reflects. “I’ve become a self-made mogul in my own lane.”

Radio became a part of this enterprise in 2005 on KLAV 1230 AM in Las Vegas, and years of practice have created “a solid format and blueprint for every show, and it is very effective down to the minute. It’s flawless and anyone can do it, with a vision and plan.”

“Unsigned Hype” not only showcases new music but also encourages new musicians. “I want them to get motivated and excited about their music and learn from us how they can get their royalties from their music and publishing,” Mobley explains.

The hosts have recently relocated themselves and their show from Las Vegas, Nevada, which had become expensive and alienating. They are happy to be producing a show that everyone in their new community can enjoy.

“I Imagine my listeners to be all ages,” Mobley explains, “because we play all genres of music from clean new school to clean old school music - with no foul language, but with positive vibe and music content.” Tune in Saturday night to meet these new hosts and appreciate some undiscovered talent!
