Calling all snake lovers or even those who might be scared of snakes, Snakefessst is a free community event full of snake education and activities. Designed for all ages, this event helps destigmatize negative views of snakes and allows the public an up-close look at these slithery creatures. The event takes place on Saturday Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the San Marcos Discovery Center.
Learn about and interact with the snakes that call the San Marcos area their home. Participate in herp walks to experience snakes and reptiles in their natural habitat. Attend lectures and visit partner booths and educational displays to learn about snakes and snake safety. Enjoy snakethemed music, photo ops, snake-themed activities, crafts, vendors and more.
There will be a youth art contest for those 18 years and younger. Art may be dropped off at the Discovery Center anytime before 10 a.m. on the day of the festival. Art can be a painting, drawing or mixed media collage of a snake of snakes on 8x10 or 8.5x11 paper. The winning design in each age category will receive a gift basket and the People’s Choice Award winner will have their art printed on a sticker for next year’s event.
“Whether you’re a lifelong herpetology enthusiast or just curious about nature, Snakefessst is the perfect opportunity for families to learn, explore and have fun,” Discovery Center Specialist and Snakefessst Event Coordinator Niki Lake said. “When people learn about snakes, they begin to appreciate their role in our ecosystem.”
