Hays High School student arrested after bringing firearm to campus

A Hays High School student was arrested and charged after bringing a firearm onto the Hays High School campus on Thursday, according to a press release from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.

During the morning hours on Sept. 4, a student notified Hays CISD staff that they heard another peer speak about having a firearm on campus. A Hays High School student was detained by Hays County school resource officers. During the course of the investigation by both school staff and the SROs, it was discovered that a 15year-old male juvenile was in possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number.

The juvenile was taken to the Hays County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with a second-degree felony for unlawful carrying of a weapon in prohibited places within a weapon-free zone and a third-degree felony for making threats while exhibiting or using a firearm on school property or a school bus while possessing or having access to the weapon. In addition, the individual faces two Class A misdemeanors, one for unlawful carrying of a weapon and another for tampering with identification numbers.

The investigation is ongoing. The sheriff’s office said that no further identifying information will be released about the juvenile’s identity.
