ROADWAY COLLISION

On Sept.3 at about 2:30 p.m. San Marcos Police responded to a rollover crash on northbound I-35 near the 204 on-ramp (between Wonder World Drive and SH 123). The driver, 46year-old John Stockton Matthews of Canyon Lake, was ejected from the Jeep and pronounced deceased at the scene. A preliminary investigation indicates Matthews lost control while attempting to enter the on-ramp, causing the vehicle to roll. According to a San Marcos Police Department official, it is believed he was not wearing a seatbelt.

At 2:45 p.m., the city of San Marcos Police Department posted on their Face- book page that the right two lanes and the on-ramp were closed and to expect major delays. An update was made at 4:55 p.m. that the roadway was back open but heavy traffic was expected to remain in the area.

Hays County Justice of the Peace Beth Smith, Precinct 2-1, ordered an autopsy, and next of kin have been notified. The San Marcos Police Department Collision Investigation Team is continuing to investigate. This is the fifth fatal crash within city limits this year.
