City Park Playground renovations underway

SAN MARCOS PARKS AND RECREATION

Big changes and big fun are coming to one of San Marcos’ most active parks.

On June 3, the San Marcos City Council approved the City Park Playground Improvement Project, which is funded through Capital Improvements Projects funds and a TML insurance claim from previous playscape damage by a vehicle. Construction started Aug. 25 and is estimated to take two months, weather permitting.

Improvements include a new playground with padded play turf, shade structures and outdoor fitness equipment for ages 2-5, 6-12, and 13 plus. There will also be trail improvements, a water bottle filling station and accessibility improvements. These include upgrades to existing sidewalks and the addition of new accessible pathways to provide seamless connectivity to the parking lot, basketball court and surrounding park areas. There will also be accessible elements within the new fitness equipment and play structures that will ensure users of all abilities can participate.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring improvements to City Park that will offer diverse play and fitness opportunities for children, teens and adults, including inclusive options for individuals of varying abilities,” a city representative said.

“The primary goal of the City Park Playground Improvements Project is to introduce new amenities currently unavailable in any of the city’s parks, while significantly enhancing ADA accessibility and connectivity. These improvements reflect the city’s commitment to inclusivity, community health and modernized recreational infrastructure. By investing in amenities for a wider range of age groups and physical abilities, the City Park Playground improvements will ensure that the park continues to serve as a vibrant, welcoming space for all residents.”

The parks department is currently in various phases of planning and design for future improvements to Mill Street Park, River Ridge Park, Retreat on Willow Creek Park and Vietnam Veterans Park for 2026 and 2027. For all park updates one can visit sanmarcostx.gov/projects
