Texas State got their first conference win of the season as the Bobcats defeated the Georgia Southern Eagles 1-0.
The Bobcats improved their overall record to 42-3 and their conference record to 1-0-1. Georgia Southern falls to 2-6-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play.
It was a defensive slugfest in the first 30 minutes of the first half as both defenses held their opposing offenses to no shots on goal.
Georgia Southern had an opportunity to strike first in the 32nd minute with a shot on goal, only for Bobcat freshman Brooklyn Escobar to make the save.
The Bobcats also had an opportunity to score first when freshman Katrin Agustdottir took a shot on goal in the 43rd minute, only for the Eagles to make the save.
Going into halftime, both the Bobcats and the Eagles were tied at 0-0.
Senior Mady Soumare had a chance to put the Bobcats up in the 48th minute with another shot on goal only for the Eagles to make the save.
Following another save by Escobar in the 49th minute, Texas State finally broke through the Georgia Southern defense. After back-to-back passes from Agustdottir to sophomore Helen Alormenu, Alormenu found Soumare, who then beat the goalkeeper to put the ball in the back of the net, giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute.
Georgia Southern aggressively tried to break through the Bobcats’ defense in the final 30 minutes of the game but were stopped by Escobar who made two critical saves, including one in the 89th minute to seal the victory for the Bobcats.
Texas State returns home Sunday to continue conference play against the Troy Trojans. Troy is looking for their first conference win of the season, coming off a 1-0 loss to Southern Miss last Thursday and a 0-0 tie against Arkansas State.
Kickoff for Texas State-Troy is set for 7 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
