Citadel of freedom for all?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

It should be axiomatic to any freedom-loving person that no one should be harmed for their beliefs, views or opinions. The answer to views you don’t like is not violence or intimidation or retribution, but more speech. Yet, Texas State’s President, Kelly Damphousse, has chosen to follow demands from Republicans, as well as his own conscience and values, to take retribution against a student who celebrated the killing of Charlie Kirk.

While I don’t support the racist, anti-semitic and misogynistic views expressed by Kirk, nor the jubilance that some people have expressed over his death, I find his assassination abhorrent and taking retribution against his detractors as antithetical to the free speech rights found in the First Amendment. Apparently, Republican leaders and their minions do not respect the free speech rights of everyone. This is a sad commentary on the condition of our republic, and bodes ill for its vitality and endurance as a citadel of freedom for all.
