A fire engulfed a unit at the Copper Beech apartments on Mill Street on Sunday afternoon on Sept. 21. The first call came in around 2:23 p.m. and the fire was out at 3:05 p.m. No injuries were reported and a cat was rescued from the unit, stabilized by EMS and then taken to a vet by its owners.
The San Marcos Fire Marshal’s office investigated the scene until about 7:00 p.m. They determined the fire started on the balcony at the northeast corner of building 17. The exact cause is still being investigated, but there’s no evidence at this point that suggests it was intentionally set.
The building is three stories tall and has eight apartments total. Four of them, those closest to the fire, can’t be lived in at the moment. The property management team at Copper Beech has made arrangements to house the displaced residents elsewhere.
“The quick actions of the responding fire units and fire stops in the attic kept the fire contained to the area where it started,” Fire Marshal Jonathan Henderson said.
