Homecoming came early for graduates of the TXST Art & Design School. The TXST alumni exhibition titled “Letting the River Spill” is now on display until Nov. 9 at the TXST Galleries in the Joan Cole Mitte building.
Located on campus at 233 W. Sessom Drive, the galleries are open to the public Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday through Saturday 12 to 5 p.m.
The show focuses on recent work made by graduates, showcasing an array of mediums and interests which flow together back to their shared connections as student artists in San Marcos. This shared point of passage, a time and a place, impacts each artist’s work.
The show was curated by TXST Gallery’s Associate Gallery Director Rebecca Marino, who has been helping run the galleries for almost a decade, assisting many of the alumni during their time as students. Marino decided that the arrival of the new TXST Galleries Director Sarah Kleinman, Ph.D., would be a fitting time for another alumni show.
The exhibition is not only a celebration of the graduates’ continued art practices but also as a way to provide an institutional history. Out of 80 applications, Marino narrowed the show down to 28 works encompassing a wide variety of mediums, including paintings, needle felt, ceramics, photography, installations and more. There are plans to host an alumni panel or possible demoonstrations and workshops throughout the next month to encourage the student population to interact with and learn from the alumni.

Artist alumni include Eric Acuña, Hollie Brown, Shane Cole, Sydney Guzman, Shaun Haugen, Aimee Jones, Alexander Kamelhair, Komie, Chantal Lesley, Eden Lopez, Alexis Mabry, Benjamin H. McVey, Monica Mohnot, Madison Nelson, Jacqueline Overby, Jessamyn Plotts, Cat Rigdon, Ryan Runcie, Michelle Monique, Sotolongo Riquer and Michael Villarreal, plus a collaboration from the art collective American Communal Industries, which includes Erin Carle, Sydney Guzman, Jessamyn Plotts and Kennedy Swift.
