Fast fashion has been normalized through the increase in online shopping and is constantly encouraged by influencer-promoted brand ads, but in a remote art sanctuary in the hills of San Marcos, one artist is pushing back against the business of mass produced, low quality clothes. Corinne Loperfido is an artist and sustainable fashion designer who has called Central Texas her home for the past few years. Her art career has taken her around the world and landed her in the creative communities of San Marcos. She partnered with Eye of the Dog Art Center to bring a soft show to a mostly ceramic-dominated space.
She filled the gallery from floor to ceiling with upcycled tapestries, patches and clothes, most originating from clothing and fabric en route to landfills. She transforms fabric into one-of-a-kind wearable artworks that rebel against the overproduction and overconsumption that is normalized in our day-to-day lives. The show is on view until Oct. 25 with gallery hours from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 405 Valley View West Road.
“I just want to make every day, ready-to-wear, easy clothing for people that is natural and upcycled,” Loperfido said. “I’m trying to wake people up to our complicity to the harms of the Earth that we perpetrate through our overconsumption, and also offer people quality items that are going to last a long time, that are as nontoxic as they can be.”
