At the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce, we believe that supporting education is one of the most powerful ways to support economic growth and community well-being. That’s why our Chamber’s number one goal is to be a champion for our local public schools and connect the business community with opportunities to help students succeed.
Throughout the year, the Chamber serves as a bridge between schools and the business community. We lead an Education Partners Committee, which brings together leaders from San Marcos CISD, Texas State University, San Marcos Academy, nonprofits and local employers to collaborate on projects that benefit students, educators and families. These connections often spark new ideas and high-impact partnerships.
One of our new initiatives is recruiting volunteers for early literacy programs, where local professionals spend time reading with young students to build confidence, vocabulary and a love of learning. It is the Reading Buddies program, facilitated by Communities In Schools with Program Managers at each campus. The one-onone time for a student with a caring adult can change a child’s trajectory, and many volunteers say it’s the most rewarding part of their month.
We also recognize the importance of investing in long-term success. Through partnerships with donors and businesses, the Chamber helps coordinate scholarships for graduating seniors, giving them a financial boost as they head to college, trade school or the workforce.
For families considering San Marcos as their new home, the Chamber produces an online informational hub, RallyfortheRattlers. com, that features school highlights, academic achievements, student activities and district news. This resource helps newcomers understand the strength of our schools and the pride our community takes in them.
Our Youth Leadership San Marcos program gives high school juniors and seniors a unique experience that broadens their understanding of local government, history, career paths and community involvement. Each year, a cohort of 15 meets with civic leaders, business owners, healthcare professionals and educators to learn about leadership and how to get involved in the community.
Why do we do all this? Because today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce. If we want to attract and retain employers in San Marcos, we must demonstrate that we are investing in future talent. And that investment happens when the business community gets involved.
Whether it’s reading to a single student, donating to scholarships or speaking to a group of students about your profession, there are countless ways to help boost the success of San Marcos CISD. Each effort makes an impact and a lasting difference, not only in a student’s life but in the future of our city.
Together, we’re helping shape a brighter future for San Marcos, one student at a time.
