Rattlers fend off furious Clemens comeback for second straight district win
Buck Steyn passed for 221 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 61 yards and another score in the Rattlers 30-13 win over the Schertz Clemens Buffaloes. The win marks the first time San Marcos has started 2-0 in district play since 2017 and the first win over the Buffaloes in Schertz since 1981.

SCHERTZ, Texas -- Buck Steyn threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another as the San Marcos Rattlers defeated the Schertz Clemens Buffaloes, 30-13 Friday night in District 29-6A football action at Lehnhoff Stadium.

“You're never going to win or lose these games the same way,” Head Coach John Walsh said. “There's so many factors that take place in it. 
That's what I told them, on the road, we stacked some wins, and that's how you gain momentum to get to the playoffs."

Steyn completed 18 of 26 passes for 221 yards without an interception, with both touchdowns going to Elliott Gray. Steyn added a 10-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter to give the Rattlers a 13-0 lead.

Justin Tardy, whose 103 yards put him over 100 in a game for the first time since gaining 161 and scoring four touchdowns in the season-opener against Hutto, scored the game’s final touchdown on the game’s final play on a 7-yard run.

San Marcos (2-0 in district, 4-2 overall) rang up 444 total yards or offense while allowing 157 and committing a season-high 14 penalties for 115 yards. it was also the team’s first game tgis season without a takeaway in defense. The Rattlers take on San Antonio East Central at Toyota Rattler Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Friday. East Central (0-2, 1-5) lost to Cibolo Steele, 49-0 last week. 

Clemens blocked a punt and a point-after attempt in the game, with the blocked punt leading to a Azsir Cumby 3-yard scoop-and-score touchdown late in the first half.

The Buffaloes rotated quarterbacks throughout the game, with Callen Kiolbassa completed 11 of 20 passes for 136 yards including a late 47-yard touchdown to Stephon Latulas that cut the Rattlers lead to 20-13 with 1:11 remaining in the third quarter.

The teams traded turnovers-on-downs on their next possessions before San Marcos set sail on a 13-play, 44-yard drive capped by a 39-yard Julio Alvarado field goal.

Clemens responded with a 9-play, 56-yard drive that ended with kicker Christopher Aikman banging a field goal attempt off the left upright with 1:53 remaining.
