LETTER TO THE EDITOR
The state of free speech in this country is abysmal. It seems that every day I read a new headline setting yet another unconstitutional precedent, and every time I fear what that means for the American people.
I can’t help but feel hopeless sitting in my bedroom as I watch countless voices be silenced every day. I have spent many nights crying over what is happening in my town, my country and across the world. It is a truly harrowing sight. I, as well as many others, feel that we are at the mercy of our country’s leaders, who have made it abundantly clear that they do not have our best interests at heart.
I am writing this letter to share one message: the American people (yes, including you) have much more power than we give ourselves credit for. The powers that be thrive on our fear and uncertainty. Do not give them that power over you. Take every opportunity you have to speak your mind. Do not let your fear silence you into submission.
Cry if you must, be afraid if you must, but do not let it stop you from participating in the free sharing of ideas and beliefs. It is not only your right, it is your obligation and duty. Speak even when your voice shakes. The blatant violations of the First Amendment that have been seen across the country are extremely telling. Those in charge feel threatened by the voice of the American people because they know there is great power in speaking your mind. Don’t silence yourself before they have a chance to.
