Monday is Indigenous Peoples’ Day and San Marcos has a rich history of native peoples since it was discovered that this area has evidence of being the longest inhabited region in North America. Makes total sense because who wouldn’t want to inhabit here? As a transplant San Martian I know this to be the case. Join the Indigenous Cultures Institute on Oct. 13 from 10 11:30 a.m. at The Meadows Center for a blessing from the Sacred Springs, officiated by Elder Dr. Mario Garza. According to the Indigenous Cultures website, ceremonial representatives hold water, fire, earth and a feather symbolizing air throughout the blessing. Elders are asked to say prayers in their Native languages and ask for healing for all people on Mother Earth. After the blessing medicine people are available for sacred smudging, a traditional offering at indigenous gatherings for individual blessings and healings. Plus enjoy song offerings in native languages. This is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the rich history of San Marcos and the indigenous people who preserve and nourish that spirit still today!
