Kyle to honor San Vicente Cemetery with Historic designation

The community of Kyle will gather on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 11:00 a.m. to officially dedicate San Vicente Cemetery as a Historic Texas Cemetery. The ceremony will take place at the cemetery grounds, 700 S. Old Stagecoach Road, and is free and open to the public.

The event will feature the inauguration of a Texas Historical Commission marker acknowledging the cemetery’s notable Mexican American cultural and historical importance. The program will include participation from local officials, descendants of those interred and community members, all gathered to respectfully commemorate the legacy of individuals buried at the site.

Founded in the early 1900s, San Vicente Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the region’s Mexican and Mexican American pioneers whose lives and contributions helped shape the history of Hays County and Central Texas. The designation and marker serve as a lasting tribute to their enduring impact.

“This marker ensures that the stories of those who came before us will be remembered and respected for generations to come,” said Linda Coker, Hays County Historical Commission Chair. “Their legacy is now preserved not only through the lives they influenced but also through this marker, which will stand as a permanent reminder of their contributions to our region’s heritage.”

The Hays County Historical Commission is a group of volunteers appointed by the Hays County Commissioner’s Court for a two-year term to preserve the history and cultural resources of Hays County. In addition to implementing the State Historical Marker program of the Texas Historical Commission on a local level, the Hays Historical Commission is active in the preservation of area cemeteries and historical sites. Our purpose is to provide information to the public and educational resources on the significance of our heritage in Hays County.

Since its establishment in 1953, the Hays County Historical Commission has erected markers at important sites across the county, inventoried every cemetery in the county, and conducted a survey of our historic locations. The Commission is active in nominating properties to the National Register of Historic Places, which is our nation’s honor roll of significant places in our history. One of our current projects will be restoring the old jail in downtown San Marcos.
