Aviation Discovery Fest brought history to life at the San Marcos airport Friday and Saturday with vintage WW II planes, aircraft rides and a variety of STEM experiments and exhibits. Guests also had the chance to talk with veterans and reenactors as they tried out simulators and several flight-themed activities.
“We are having an education event trying to get kids excited about aviation,” said Deena Clausen, Wing Leader for Central Texas branch of the Commemorative Air Force. Twelve different stations focused on the science of flight as well as the role of the military in the history of U.S. aviation.
“We’ve got kids learning about how airplanes work and how they fly,” said Clausen. “We’ve got demonstrations like stomp rockets that show what happens when rockets take off. We also have a demonstration about Bernoulli concepts of air flow and how they interact with flying a plane.” Other activities included manual flight simulators and rivet stations demon- strating the construction techniques and maintenance of aircrafts.
The Alamo Eagles Chapter chapter of the 101st Airborne Division Association set up a “Thank a Soldier” table where kids (as well as adults) could write letters to military service members that will be delivered via the Soldiers’ Angels organization.
Janice Moreno, a retired veteran who served 20 years in the military, ran the table, which provided xeroxed forms to fill out and color.
“They can write a note, and they will be delivered to soldiers and veterans down in San Antonio. If they have a veteran or a soldier in their life or family and they want to take it, they can take it and give it to them in person.”
The San Marcos Airport will host the Texas Capital Air Show on November 1 and 2. Gates will open at 9:30 both days, with flying demonstrations from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The show features demo flights demo flights of the USAF F-22 Raptor and the Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets, as well as performances by the Northern Stars Aeroteam and the Wings & Warriors Jump Team.
“It’s going to be a phenomenal Air Show,” said Clausen.
