RIVER REELS FILM FEST FEATURING MOLLY IVINS MOVIE

The River Reels Film Fest takes place in Martindale this weekend, with a great list of films showing for free in the Old Crook Store. Sunday features a cool list of short films about Texas rivers, but what I’m excited about is the guest panels following the full-length movies.
On Saturday, Jesse Flores will host a discussion following “The In Between,” a documentary about growing up in the border town of Eagle Pass. The film has been selected to air on the terrific PBS series “Independent Lens.” Flores is an Eagle Pass resident who gained national notoriety by suing Governor Abbott.
Texas Observer staff will discuss their most famous alum after the screening of ”Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins.” Ivins was a real kick in the pants to Texas politicians, including George W. Bush, whom she referred to as “Shrub.” This is a terrific movie, and will leave you wishing Molly and her scathing wit were still around today to poke fun at the current crop of politicians.

BOO! HOLE IN WIMBERLEY

Ghosts, ghouls and goblins are set to take over the woods as the City of Wimberley hosts its annual Boo! Hole at Blue Hole Regional Park this Saturday. The beloved park transforms into a frightfully fun festival where hundreds—if not thousands—of little monsters in costume creep down the trick-or-treat trail, collecting goodies from local businesses along the way. There’ll be fang-tastic carnival games, spine-tingling live music, a haunted hayride, and even a costume contest fit for witches, werewolves and everything in between. As the sun sets, one of the trails turns haunted for brave souls seeking a spooky stroll through the shadows. Expect s’mores, shrieks and snapshots at the photo booth, too. Admission is free, and the fun runs from 4 to 10 p.m. So grab your broomsticks and head to Blue Hole for a howling good time!
OUTSIDERS LIVE & BANJO’S BIRTHDAY

“Stay Golden.” This is the quote that stayed with me after reading “The Outsiders” in middle school. Although based in 1960s, the story is timeless, touching on the characters’ relationships to social class, identify and violence as a means to control conflict. See the story live as presented by the Broke Thespians Theatre Company, premiering today at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW. The show runs Oct. 18, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. with additional shows on Oct. 19 and 26 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are limited and selling fast, so reserve yours today to see S.E. Hinton’s novel come to life.
On Saturday, make your way to Middleton Brewing for Banjo’s Birthday Bash! Banjo is turning 13 and is the breweries beloved pup who is often there to greet guests with a wag. The event is from 5 to 10 p.m. and proceeds will benefit animal organization PALS of Central Texas. Local music collective &bops will be showcasing local musicians including Brainwavve, Kuvu, Kinder, Vhu, Full Phonetic, Melonious Phonk, and Jenun.
