On Sunday Oct. 5, the San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship began a new chapter when they held their first service in a new location at the First Lutheran Church at 130 W. Holland St.
Founded in 1987, SMUUF’s first church service was held in the old San Marcos public library on Hutchinson Street. Since then, the church has met at various facilities throughout San Marcos. Now, SMUUF is renting the First Lutheran gymnasium. SMUUF Minister Rev. Nell Newton led the first service in the gym.
“Today starts a new chapter in the story of the San Marcos UU Fellowship,” Newton said. “We’re going to write it together, week by week. We cannot possibly know how it will turn out in the end, but so far, it’s a heck of a story!”
During the Pandemic, the congregation moved online, and eventually returned to meeting in person. In time, the congregation hopes to build on land it holds on Craddock Avenue. Until then, the liberal religious group is working to grow in size and spirit.
“First Lutheran has welcomed us so kindly! We look forward to being good neighbors,” Newton said.
Services are held each Sunday at 11:00 a.m at the First Lutheran Church, 130 W. Holland St., San Marcos, followed by refreshments and fellowship at noon. Children’s class and child care are provided. For more information, go to the SUUF Website at smuuf.org.
