SPOOKY ON THE SQUARE

Halloween is a holiday that seems to be celebrated all October, and the weekend before the holiday is prime time for all things spooky. Downtown San Marcos is the place to be this Saturday with two events, the annual Spooky Edition of Art Squared where you’ll find dozens of local artists selling handmade works, both creepy and cute. The market wraps around the courthouse lawn and will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The San Marcos Art League hosts this event and will also be hosting their annual Art Squared window painting competition around the square. From 8:30 to 10 a.m. watch local kiddos transform downtown business windows into a scary good piece of art.

From 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Downtown will be activated for the city sponsored event, Spirit Squared. This event blends spooky season with the rich traditions of Día de los Muertos. There will be a community ofrenda where guests can bring a photo of a loved one to be honored. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. there will be 17 participating downtown businesses offering spooky activities and crafts. From 4 to 7 p.m. there will be sugar skull face painting and an ofrenda ceremony at 6 p.m. followed by live music at 6:30 and a screening of “Coco” at 7 p.m. with free popcorn.
