The Gary Job Corps Corrections Program recently promoted William Toney Johnson to be the Major of the Program. Johnson came from a law enforcement background. His mother and father were Deputies with the Cabell County Sheriff ’s Office in West Virginia. He joined the U.S. Air Force upon graduating from high school, serving almost 20 years, which included service in both Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Upon his departure from the Air Force he joined his parents with the Cabell County Sheriff ’s Office, then transferring to the Corrections Department for the next 15 years before retiring.
Moving to Texas in March 2021, the Major could not resist the pull to return to Corrections, and started working at the Kyle Correctional Center in Kyle, in March 2025. The Gary Job Corp’s addition was a loss to the Kyle Facility, when he came aboard as an Instructor to the Gary Job Corps Corrections Cadets.
The training is conducted to show Cadets how to: oversee individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial, or who have been sentenced to serve time in jail or prison; prevent fights and potential riots; and take inventory of possessions of new inmates. Graduate Cadets get employed in County, City, State and Federal Corrections Institutions.
