LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Editor, SMDR
After reading all those OPEDs in the SMDR, I felt compelled to add my 2 cents worth on the upcoming elections for city council.
About 7 or 8 months ago, I spoke before the council in which at the end, I called for all their resignations - from the mayor, city manager, council members, and department heads all the way down to non performers.
Why? For the following reasons: our streets like San Antonio St. and others are deplorable; stripes on our streets are pitiful because if we can’t see the lines, it increases the chance for an accident; they close Cheatham Street so that non residents can come and damage our river and park areas while our own citizens have to drive all the way around just to get to HEB; the construction in Victory Gardens was terrible and the company got more money than their bid even while taking a year longer to finish; there’s only one lane on River Rd. coming from Wal-Mart although we see no one working on the road for months; the train blocks our city streets for hours at a time even though there’s 15 miles between San Marcos and New Braunfels and 50 miles between San Marcos and San Antonio; the city destroyed all our beautiful elephant ears and purple blooming water lilies as well as the Rio Grande perch and sunfish and shiners; a member of the city administration promised me 15 years ago the fence along the banks of the river would be removed in 3 years; it’s still there; the city council members have to realize that the river belongs to the State of Texas, not the city, and the fence must be taken down so the citizens of San Marcos can enjoy fishing from the banks as we used to 15 years ago; and there are many other reasons why I called for their resignations, many many more.
The members right now, in my opinion, are more interested in giving big companies more tax breaks and more incentives to move here than they are in the concerns of the citizens of San Marcos. They give Big Business tax breaks while increasing our own taxes and water rates.
As for the council members, I will not vote for either incumbent. We need new council members who will work for us, the citizens of San Marcos. They need to listen to our concerns and act on them, not just promise this and that.
Sincerely, Ezekiel Enriquez Sr.
