Protect PAWS’s animals, staff and legacy

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I am writing in response to the article “PAWS announces temporary closing of its Kyle shelter,” published in the San Marcos Daily Record on Oct. 17.

As a long-time supporter of PAWS, I am deeply concerned for the shelter’s future and the lack of clarity surrounding its next steps. Public records show that PAWS ended 2023 in a stable financial position. Yet the recent announcement of a facility closure on Oct. 31 — coupled with a sudden appeal for $200,000 in emergency funding — has left many donors, volunteers and community members unsure how to best help.

PAWS has served Central Texas with compassion for nearly 40 years. The community wants to see it recover and continue its lifesaving mission, but that will require transparency from leadership. I join the Save PAWS Transparency Coalition in respectfully urging the Board of Directors to host an open town hall meeting this week to share current financial and strategic information, answer community questions, and work toward collaborative solutions that protect PAWS’s animals, staff and legacy.

The community stands ready to help once we understand the facts and the path forward. Transparency will strengthen trust — and trust will ensure PAWS continues serving Central Texas for decades to come.

With gratitude, Cody Bradstreet On behalf of the Save PAWS Transparency Coalition
