PARKS AND RECREATION

There was candy, games, costumes and smiles galore at the annual Farmer Fred’s Fall Carnival, which took place on Oct. 24 at City Park. The carnival has taken place on the Friday before Halloween for over 30 years, according to Christie Murillo, San Marcos Parks and Recreation marketing and outreach coordinator.

Murillo said this year featured a haunted hayride, costume contest, photo opportunities and plenty of carnival games to enjoy.

While the exact age of the carnival is unknown, Murillo said it has been taking place since at least 1996. It was started as a way to bring the community together for a free and fun Fall event.

“The Parks and Recreation Department recognized that there were not many options at the time for a safe, fun and free activity or place for families to attend for Halloween, so they worked to create just that,” Murillo said. “Over the years it has grown and evolved and remains a staple event that generations of families have enjoyed.”

Farmer Fred’s provides the opportunity for family- friendly fun for everyone, and puts city staff at the forefront of the community.

“Participants can enjoy learning about what all the city offers, and can interact with city staff, community volunteers and local business[es],” she said. “They can also enjoy some free and ageappropriate candy and toys, and, most importantly, have fun in a safe environment. Added bonus — they can come dressed up in their favorite Halloween costume and participate in a costume contest.”

Murillo said Farmer Fred’s is made possible by city departments, community volunteers and local businesses who contribute to a safe, fun and, most importantly, free Halloween event.
