Zelick’s Icehouse is hosting a Grateful Dead Halloween party tonight with live music from the Ace Pepper Band. The name “Grateful Dead” is a perfect match for the peak of spooky season, but the shaggy band members have always seemed more interested in lighting up than dressing up in scary costumes. So where did the name come from?
According to band legend, leader and lead guitar player Jerry Garcia found the name by randomly opening a dictionary. “Grateful Dead” refers to a folk motif about a person who helps out a stranger by paying for their deceased relative’s burial or paying off their debts. Later, that person is unexpectedly helped by the grateful spirit, often in a time of great need.
So go and enjoy the live music and Grateful Dead jams… and buy a beverage for a stranger. Maybe your good deed will come back to haunt you. Or maybe you’ll see the spirt of Jerry jamming with the Ace Pepper Band. It’s Halloween after all...
